Geboren in 1927 te Brussel, trekt Pierre Alechinsky na zijn studies aan de Ecole nationale supérieure d 'Architecture et Art décoratifs de Bruxelles (La Cambre) naar Parijs waar hij zich in 1951 definitief vestigt. Sinds 1963 werkt en leeft hij te Bougival in de streek van LesYvelines. Zijn oeuvre is vertegenwoordigd in de belangrijkste musea ter wereld; heel wat tentoonstellingen en retrospectieven werden reeds aan hem gewijd. Pierre Alechinsky schildert, tekent, maakt ceramiek en schrijft maar hij is tevens een gepassioneerd graveur, wat zijn grafische vorming verraadt. Aan het einde van de jaren 1940 ontmoet Alechinsky Christian Dotremont, een van de stichter-protagonisten van de Cobra-groep, die zweert bij de spontaniteit van kleur en lijn . Wanneer na enkele jaren de Cobra-groep uit elkaar valt, behoudt Alechinsky's oeuvre de bezieling van deze avant-gardegroep. In 1954 initieert Walasse Ting hem in de Chinese schilderkunst, wat bijdraagt tot een nieuw gevonden creativiteit en het ontdekken van nieuwe horizonten. Een jaar later bezoekt hij Japan en komt onder de indruk van de schoonheid van de Oosterse kaligrafie. Diverse technieken en zorgvuldig gekozen media maken het oeuvre van Pierre Alechinsky rijk en boeiend: deze publicatie biedt dan ook een prachtig overzicht van de verschillende fasen in zijn artistiek zoeken. Met het werk Central Park in 1965 verschijnen voor het eerst de typische kanttekeningen in Chinese inkt. Deze boordversieringen, ritmisch, weelderig en fijn, worden vanaf dan een constante in zijn werk en laten hem toe te experimenteren met materiaal en vorm.
